Lending and Learning: Building a Career in Commercial Real Estate Finance

In this conversation with Steve, I share the path that led me into commercial real estate finance and the lessons learned along the way. My early interest in real estate began at home, where my parents often discussed building passive income through residential properties. That curiosity led me to start my career in residential mortgage brokerage, where I learned the fundamentals of financing and property ownership.

From there, my focus expanded into commercial real estate. Graduate studies helped deepen my understanding of concepts like cap rates and investment analysis, and I eventually moved into capital markets brokerage, working directly with sponsors, investors, and lenders to structure financing for commercial real estate transactions.

We also discuss the importance of continuous learning, mentorship, and staying intellectually curious in an industry that is constantly evolving. From traditional brokerage to technology-enabled platforms like StackSource, this conversation highlights how professionals can grow their careers while adapting to the changing landscape of real estate finance.

For anyone exploring a career in commercial real estate or looking to better understand the financing side of the industry, this discussion offers practical insights into how the journey often unfolds.
